woman with disabilities For decades, Volunteers of America has been a community leader in helping persons with disabilities enjoy a higher quality of life.

Community Living Services has been active in promoting greater dignity and respect for these individuals since 1974, when it opened New Orleans' first group home for adults with mental retardation developmental disabilities.

Starting With Respect, Ending With Dignity
Community Living helps adults and children with disabilities in many different ways. It is the organization's belief that persons with developmental disabilities, unable to live independently in their own homes, function more productively and with greater self-esteem in small, residential settings, with intensive training in independent living skills, rather than in institutions.

The focus is on what people with disabilities need and how Volunteers of America can support them in meeting those needs. We also educates the community, so barriers to independence of persons with disabilities can be broken down.

Homes Rather Than Institutions
We operate 12 community group homes for 66 adults and 12 children. These are truly homes, located in residential areas of New Orleans, Slidell, and Hammond. Each home houses six to eight people along with professional staff. The staff ensure a comfortable, family-like environment and help each individual get treatment, training and encouragement to fulfill their potential.
