Volunteers of America has been “building community” in the New Orleans area for more than a century.  When Hurricane Katrina hit, building community became literal.
In response to destruction, suffering and loss, we created new initiatives to help people rebuild their lives and find housing and essential services. 
family and damaged homeWe began coordinating the placement of tens of thousands of volunteers, matching them with meaningful recovery work.  Our efforts will continue until the recovery is complete.

The hurricane did more than disrupt Lisa Ann Hernandez’s life, it hit her when she was down. Katrina destroyed all she had in Chalmette at the same time she was undergoing other life challenges. After the storm, Hernandez found herself living in a women’s shelter, pregnant, alone and unemployed.
