Jeff St. Romain
It’s been said that New Orleans natives,
wherever they may find themselves, always feel drawn back home. When
our city was hit hard by the storm, many report the longing for home
intensified. |
That was true for Jeff St. Romain, who had been living in Utah and leading the Volunteers of America organization there for many years. St. Romain had built a life out west and was praised, according to one Utah newspaper, as a “ hands-on administrator equally adept at working through bureaucratic mazes and providing personal encouragement to people whose lives are in peril.” He was recognized as a tireless advocate for Utah's homeless, people with substance-abuse problems and senior citizens.
But with St. Romain, the call home became personal. Thirty-eight of his family members were displaced by the storm. We all know the rest of the story. Most of the city flooded, recovery occurring at a snail’s pace, human needs overwhelming.
St. Romain decided to come home. He recently joined Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans as Executive Vice President for Administration and Planning. We are privileged to have him and his experience.
Everyone who comes home to help is welcome but St. Romain will do much to aid our area’s recovery. His experience in helping persons in need, in social services administration and in solving human problems on a large scale will be invaluable. As Volunteers of America continues to work to adapt its services to help the recovery, St. Romain’s skills will serve our organization and our community well.
St. Romain’s motto is “Don't judge. Do what you can." These guiding words will serve him well in his new position.
